NewsS.F. Opera broadcasts in high-defSan Francisco Opera and KQED have made a pact to broadcast four operas recorded in high definition at the War Memorial Opera House. The TV series will be hosted by Rita Moreno, and will include performances of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, starring Patricia Racette (Aug. 26), Mozart's Don Giovanni, starring Mariusz Kwiecien (Sept. 2), Puccini's La Rondine, starring Angela Gheorghiu (Sept. 16) and Saint-Saëns' Samson and Dalilah, starring Olga Borodina and Clifton Forbis (Sept. 23). Each airing will include backstage interviews with singers, conductors, directors and other members of the artistic and creative team. The operas will air Thursday evenings at 8 p.m., with additional airings in subsequent days. Bold and Beautiful - Anna KareninaOpera San José proudly launches its 27th Anniversary Season with the West Coast premiere of Anna Karenina, an American opera by composer David Carlson with libretto by the late Colin Graham. Eight performances are scheduled from September 11 through 26 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San José. Opera San José will present Anna Karenina with a new scene added by the composer following the opera’s 2007 world premiere at Florida Grand Opera. More information about Anna Karenina available here King Library SeriesThis August the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library will host an exhibit and events in conjunction with Opera San José’s opening of the West Coast premiere of Anna Karenina. Members of the public are invited to visit the 2nd floor of the King Library in downtown San José, August 3 through August 30 for a gallery exhibit featuring Anna Karenina composer David Carlson’s personal collection of orchestral manuscripts. Visitors will have the opportunity to take a behind the scenes look at the creative process of the making of a new American opera with a rare glimpse at musical composition artifacts, costume and set design renderings, and still photos.
